The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a sweet and affectionate dog that expects to be pampered. This toy spaniel was so adored by King Charles that the breed was eventually named after him. His successor, King Charles II, also loved and perpetuated the breed. By the middle of the 20th century, this was one of the most popular breeds in England, and by 1996 the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club as a member of the toy group.

This is a small spaniel, standing a mere 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder and weighing 15 to 20 pounds. The hair coat is silky and of medium length, and although not curly, may have a slight wave. There is feathering on the tail, legs, feet, ears and chest. The coat comes in four typical colors: blenheim, which is bright chestnut red markings broken up on a white background; tricolor, which is jet black markings broken up on a white background with rich tan markings; black and tan; and ruby. The breed has a characteristic slightly rounded head, and the sloping shoulders give this dog an elegant and regal look. The eyes are large and round, which gives the classic soft expression.

This breed is best suited for a pampered indoor life. They display the temperament of an extrovert, can be quite lively and vocal, and prefers to be with their family or other dogs. They are intelligent and eager, graceful and well-balanced, free-spirited and a lot of fun. They are gentle and have a loving nature, but do not have patience for unruly children. Although this breed is known as the 'ultimate lap dogs' because they are so elegant and affectionate, they also have a sporting character and can do well in agility and even hunting. As a member of the spaniel family, this breed is a natural retriever and loves to swim. They also would make excellent therapy dogs.
